Mattie, May 2002

MattieOne day, a woman called Puppy Love Rescue in McDonough, Georgia to relinquish a young female black Lab named Mattie, thought to be about 1 to 2 years old. The caller told the agency that friends had left Mattie and said they would return for her but never did. She had been keeping Mattie in a small pen in the backyard and felt that Mattie deserved a real home.

Thanks to Puppy Love and Mattie's caregiver at the shelter, Mattie got veterinary care. When Mattie was found to be positive for heartworms, her caregiver approached LABMED for help in treating the infection. Mattie was probably getting more attention than she'd gotten in a while, making her a little timid. Her rescuer could see that Mattie clearly wanted to learn and was very smart, adding that she "loves to ride in the car, and we stopped to get ice cream the other day."

With a long list of potential adopters in Manchester, New Hampshire giving
Mattie the chance for a good home, and with a commitment from her rescuer to provide foster care for as long as necessary, LABMED agreed to fund Mattie's heartworm treatment. Thanks to everyone who supported Mattie, she recovered and may already have found happiness in a forever home.
